Corner Brook, NL: The Longshoremen’s Protective Union (International Longshoremen’s Association) Local 1953 has approved a 5-year collective agreement with Logistec Stevedoring Inc. The fundamental issues at hand including family sustaining wages, and job security was enhanced and ratified by 77% of the rank and file membership.

The parties negotiated over several sessions to reach a tentative deal. The unions bargaining committee secured wage increases of more than 20.16% over the term of the five-year agreement. The agreement shows that the Membership in the Port of Corner Brook is willing to collaborate with their employers to improve standards and be competitive in the marine cargo industry at the same time. LSPU (I.L.A.) Local 1953 is especially proud to represent a workforce where 51% of the membership are Indigenous. LSPU (I.L.A.) Local 1953 remains committed to Truth and Reconciliation and the 94 Calls to Action in The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada final report in 2015. The LSPU continues to advocate government, industry and all stakeholders for Decent Jobs on the Docks of our province.

Quote

LSPU (LL.A.) Local 1953 has been moving General Cargo and Natural Resources on Newfoundland & Labrador Docks for 135+ years. We have struggled to bring about an industry standard collective agreement for our members in the west coast, Port of Corner Brook. The employer offer on terms and conditions was suitable enough for the membership to approve. We are happy to close the gap between our port and other Canadian ports. Outstanding issues were settled satisfactorily, and a work stoppage was avoided.
